Cavalry officer in the United States Army on the Western frontier and a Confederate general during the American Civil War (1827-1910) who fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run and, during the Gettysburg Campaign, he commanded a brigade of two North Carolina cavalry regiments primarily assigned to scout for Robert E. Lee. ALS signed “B. H. Robertson,” one page, 5.75 x 9, no date. Handwritten letter to "Mrs. Wise," ostensibly Evelyn Byrd Beverly Douglas, the wife of Virginia Congressman John Sergeant Wise. In full: "Why did you not meet your engagement Saturday P.M.? I was at Willards promptly on time (3 o'clock) and learned you had just left for the depot—to which I hurried—to find you gone! You may (?) imagine my disappointment after your saying we might talk half an hour! The train they told me left at 3:15—just as I arrived. I selected the roses myself & sorry you missed them."
