Description

Early American politician (1757-1842) who served as the second United States Secretary of the Navy from 1801 to 1809, the sixth United States Secretary of State from 1809 to 1811, and briefly as Attorney General. ALS signed “R. Smith,” one page both sides, 8 x 9.75, February 12, 1816. Letter to Robert G. Harper, asking for advice on an insurance matter. In part: "I am instructed by the Universal Insurance Company to obtain your opinion on the enclosed case. The only question is whether the Freight earned at Bermuda can be deducted from the claim…It is maintained on the part of Mr. Gooding that, the policy being a valued one, he is entitled to the amount of the valuation. It is alleged on the part of the Office, that the loss of freight is not a total loss, inasmuch as part has been received, and that valued policies always become open in cases where the loss is partial." In fine condition.
