Career US Army officer (1819-1892) who served in the Mexican-American War and as a Union general in the Civil War, during which he was chief of artillery of the Department of the Cumberland and a participant in the siege and surrender of Atlanta. Scarce and desirable Civil War-era 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Brannon in uniform, signed on the reverse in ink, "J. M. Brannon, Brig. Gen'l U.S.V." In fine condition, with a few small stains.
