'Silent Cal' on a potential engagement: "I shall be glad to talk a little but I cannot undertake to be the principal speaker. I do not think the talking is very important anyway"

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.5 x 7.5, The Mayor, Northampton, Massachusetts letterhead, June 27, 1911. Letter to "Miss Sprague," in full: "Mother writes me you would like me to speak at Old House Day. I am sorry my engagements are such that I cannot be sure I could be present. I think perhaps you might get Nelson Browne. If I should be able to come I shall be glad to talk a little but I cannot undertake to be the principal speaker. I do not think the talking is very important anyway." He adds a postscript, initialed "C. C.," in full: "P.S. I will also suggest Ernest Moore." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, overall creasing, and some dampstaining to the second page.
