"I have had to look through 36 Symphonies"

Hungarian violinist and composer (1831-1907) ranked second only to Paganini among 19th-century virtuosi. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, April 8. Letter to Mrs. Senior, in part: "How much should I like to come out to Lavender Hill! But this time even the Sundays are not mine; I have had to look through 36 Symphonies, being an umpire…I am anxious to get to Meran in Tyrol, where my wife is staying on account of an inveterate severe head cold." In very good to fine condition, with some small stains, and old mounting residue on the back of the last page.
