Description

Handwritten letter by E. B. White with charming Charlotte sketch, in reply to touching "expressions of feeling about 'Charlotte's Web'"

ALS signed “E. B. White" with a sketch of Charlotte, three pages in a 5 x 8.5 card depicting a New England winter, January 17, 1977. Lengthy handwritten letter to Mr. Goldberg, responding to students' comments on his beloved book Charlotte's Web. In part: "This letter is to you, and to the children whose letters you forwarded to me. I was pleased and touched by your expressions of feeling about 'Charlotte's Web,' and I thank you all for taking the trouble to write. I read Mrs. Goldberg's letter first and learned that she had finished her thirteenth reading of the book. That must be something of a record. Anyway, I was moved by its warmth of feeling about the characters and the story—it means a great deal to me to receive such a lovely letter. Then I went on and read all the other wonderful letters from the class. They were great, and I feel very good that I was able to tell a story that amused and interested you all. I want to thank Felise Schaeffer, too, for the picture of Wilbur that she put at the bottom of her letter. I wish I could draw as well as that. I still live in Maine, but my barn seems empty and forlorn these days. The sheep are gone, there are no pigs or cows. Even the big grey spiders have disappeared. Once in a while, Templeton shows up and steals grain from the hens. The hay is gone from the mows, and the barn seems quiet, except for the geese. The geese are still with me, and they still give me a loud welcome when I go out at 6 o'clock in the morning, long before daylight." In fine condition, with light edge toning. Extraordinary content with a fantastic sketch of his most famous character.
