Judge Bronson Collector of the Port of New York," in part: "We the undersigned, being acquainted with Mr. L. Withington would most cheerfully recommend him as a consistant Democrat, and qualified to fill the Situation he applys.” Above, Withington makes his plea for “obtaining a Situation as Inspector of Customs.” Signed at the conclusion by William M. ‘Boss’ Tweed, and countersigned by seven others, including: New York Mayor and renowned shipbuilder Jacob Aaron Westervelt, Elder Archibald Maclay, lawyer and politician Charles D. Stickney, Elias L. Smith, Thomas K. Downing, and two others. In fine condition.
