Description

United Nations Peace Medal from 1971, presented to Al Worden by Secretary-General U Thant in a ceremony on August 24, 1971. Plated in 18K gold by The Franklin Mint, the medal measures 38 mm in diameter and weighs 40 grams. One side depicts the UN logo surmounted by the year ("1971") encircled by "United Nations" in several languages; the other features a swirling dove design, with multi-lingual "Peace" at center. Marked "18K" on the edge. Complete with its original case, featuring the UN logo inside the lid. The medal exhibits some minor tarnishing, and the case has some light soiling to interior.

The Apollo 15 crew were the first to ever be honored with the United Nations Peace Medal, receiving the award from U That in a ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York City shortly after their return to Earth. Since that occasion, other recipients of the award have included Haile Selassie, Leonid Brezhnev, the Bee Gees, and Steven Spielberg. From the collection of Apollo 15 CMP Al Worden, and accompanied by a letter of provenance from his daughter Alison (Worden) Penczak.
