Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 11, January 19, 1854. President Pierce appoints Nicolas B. Vanzandt "to be a Justice of the Peace" in the District of Columbia. Prominently signed at the conclusion in ink by President Pierce, and countersigned by Secretary of State William Marcy. The seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. Nicely double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 26.5 x 16. In very good to fine condition, with light toning and soiling, some small stains, and small areas of paper loss along the intersecting folds.
