Description

Magnificent Astronaut Hall of Fame medal presented to Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden on October 4, 1997. Bronze, 3″ in diameter, 240 gm, produced by the Medallic Art Company in Dayton, NV. The front features the bold, beautifully designed profile of an astronaut in space suit looking up to the stars, encircled by large text: “U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame”; the reverse is centrally engraved, “Alfred M. Worden, Inducted, October 4, 1997, Apollo 15,” and the border bears a raised quote from President John F. Kennedy: “‘We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained,’ JFK.” The medal retains its original bright blue ribbon and its blue velvet presentation case. In fine condition. Accompanied by a photo of Worden proudly wearing his HOF medal.

The Astronaut Hall of Fame was formed in the 1980s by the surviving Mercury Seven Astronauts and Betty Grissom to establish a place where space travelers could be remembered and honored. A remarkable piece that honors a most remarkable man.

From the collection of Apollo 15 CMP Al Worden, and accompanied by a letter of provenance from his daughter Alison (Worden) Penczak.
