NASA Distinguished Service Medal awarded to Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden, featuring a 1.75″ diameter medal with emblem reading, "Distinguished Service, NASA," suspended from a navy-and-teal ribbon. The reverse of the medal is engraved: “Alfred M. Worden.” Included is the original blue presentation case, as well as a ‘Type 2’ miniature version of the medal and a matching lapel pin. In overall fine condition. The NASA Distinguished Service Medal is the highest award which may be bestowed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States: it may be presented to any member of the federal government, including both military astronauts and civilian employees. A particularly desirable and significant offering given the recipient’s vital role in the successful, record-setting flight of Apollo 15. Alongside his crewmates Jim Irwin and Dave Scott, Al Worden received this medal in 1971 not long after their historic trip to the moon.
From the collection of Apollo 15 CMP Al Worden, and accompanied by a letter of provenance from his daughter Alison (Worden) Penczak.
