Description

Typed statement signed "Chuck Yeager, USAF," one page, 8.5 x 11, NASA letterhead with a 32-cent stamp and cancellation date of October 14, 1997. The statement finds Yeager reflecting on becoming the first human to officially break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, when he flew the experimental Bell X-1 at Mach 1 at an altitude of 45,000 ft. In part: “As I accelerated, the Mach meter jumped from .96 to over 1.0. They must not have had a lot of confidence in our program because the Mach meter only went to 1.0. One minute it was fixed at .96, then it fluctuated and jumped off the scale. On extrapolation, it worked out to about 1.05 Mach.” In fine condition.
