TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, August 17, 1949. Letter to Shriners leader William Woodfield, Jr., in full: "I certainly appreciated most highly your good letter of August twelfth. I am glad the Diamond Jubilee Convention of the Shrine worked out to your entire satisfaction. I enjoyed it immensely." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and a vintage original glossy photograph of Truman and Woodfield dressed in Masonic garb at the White House in September 1945.
Truman was an active Mason, and of the fourteen U.S. Presidents who were Masons, President Truman is the only one to have been given the 33° of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite. ‘Freemasonry,’ Truman wrote, ‘is a system of morals which makes it easier to live with your fellow man, whether he understands it or not.’
