New York Journal coverage of Washington's funeral, attended by Alexander Hamilton

Original issue of the New York Journal & Patriotic Register newspaper published by Ann Greenleaf on Wall Street, four pages, 11.5 x 19.25, January 8, 1800. Much of the front page is dedicated to coverage of George Washington's funeral held in New York on December 31, 1799, and includes the order of procession of the various regiments, officers, and societies paying tribute. In part: "The Citizens in their Military and Civil Habiliments, with the Foreigners of various Nations, all eager to join in testimonies of veneration for the Great Deceased, having assembled in their appointed order, the Procession moved under the guidance of Signals, the mournful sounds of Minute Guns and Muffled Bells, in the following order: Officer and Eight Dragoons. Sixth Regiment, in Platoons…Cavalry. Rifle Company. Militia Officers. Officers of the Navy of the United States. Officers of the Army of the U. States. Adjutant General of the United States and Suite. Major Gen. Hamilton and Suite. Citizenry. St. Stephen's Society. Tammany Hall Society." A description of similar ceremonies held in New Jersey is later described. Other items of note include coverage of the recapture of the HMS Hermione, a notice for a runaway "negro man, named Tom," and news of the French military campaign in Egypt. In very good to fine condition, with scattered staining.
