Description

Large color 36.5 x 17.5 print of Herb Ryman’s painting of the iconic Disneyland entrance that for years hung in the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. The print depicts the majestic entrance to the park, with several spectators preparing to walk through the gate of Sleeping Beauty’s stunning castle. The upper left is titled “Castle Entrance, Fantasy Land,” and the lower right bears a Disneyland copyright. Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 45 x 26; frame backing is marked with inventory: “Design I, S/M: Disneyland, O.G. Hotel, Room: OGAA-4.” In fine condition, with a small crack to glass in the lower right corner, and some separation to the top edge of the mat.

American artist and Disney Imagineer Herb Ryman (1910-1989) initially worked as sole artist and illustrator for MGM Studios, where he helped design famous films like David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Mutiny on the Bounty, Anna Karenina, and The Wizard of Oz. He joined Disney in 1938, and although he served as an art director on the films Fantasia and Dumbo, Ryman is perhaps best remembered for drawing the first illustrations of Walt Disney's vision of a theme park that eventually became Disneyland.
