Description

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, January 23, 1886. Letter to General William B. Hazen, in full: "In answer to yours of the 17th I am now enabled to send you the name of C. D. Green, Jr., No. 311. Olin St., St. Louis, who is a commissioner for all the States. Please in writing suggest the propriety of his coming to my house any morning before 10 & 12, giving me notice in advance." Hazen forwards Sherman’s letter, writing and initialing along the bottom: “Mr. Mackey, Please notice the Genl’s request to come to his house. W. B. H." In very good to fine condition, with overall soiling and intersecting folds.

Hazen was a career US soldier, remembered for his defense of 'Hell's Half Acre' at the Battle of Stones River in 1862, and for seizing Fort McAllister, Georgia, in December 1864, which allowed William Sherman to capture Savannah at the end of his 'March to the Sea.'
