French mathematician, astronomer, and geophysicist (1713-1765) whose work helped to establish the validity of the principles and results that Sir Isaac Newton had outlined in the Principia. ADS in French, signed “Clairaut,” one page, 6.5 x 8, May 6, 1741. Document stating that he has examined, for the Academie, a "Memoire intitulé Methode d'approcher geometriquement et en Sens directement contraire d'un point qui donneroit la quadrature du Cercle" [Method of approaching geometrically and in sense directly opposite of a point which would give the squaring of the Circle] by Mr. Bedau. Clairaut credits the author with some originality of thought but is not overly impressed by his propositions. In fine condition.
