American attorney and the first and only Whig justice of the Supreme Court (1809-1874). ALS signed “B. R. Curtis,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, December 29, 1873. Letter to E. W. Stoughton regarding attending a legal engagement despite his ill health. In part: "I have been shut up at home for a week with a painful attack of rheumatism & perhaps a little touch of gout…But having been under an engagement of long standing to argue a case on the 2d Jan at Trenton I am coming to N.Y. attended and cared for by Mrs. Curtis, on my way to that dreary place. I shall go to a hotel where I can be as I please & have no compunctions about putting any one to inconvenience. When I get through at Trenton I may be a day or two in N.Y. & if not too lame shall see you." In fine condition.
