Chemist (1893-1978) who contributed to wartime research on poison gases during WWI and atomic bombs during WWII, and served as president of Harvard University from 1933 to 1953. Outstanding vintage matte-finish 9.75 x 12.5 photo of the chemist using a slide rule, signed and inscribed in fountain pen to his assistant, "To Virginia Proctor, with grateful appreciation of her effective help and with all good wishes, James B. Conant.” Also signed by renowned portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh. Framed and in very fine condition. Proctor was Conant's secretary/administrative assistant from 1946 to 1953.
