Description

"Mrs. John F. Kennedy" tries to return a painting to an NYC gallery: "My husband does not like it at all"

ALS signed twice, “Jacqueline Kennedy, Mrs. John F. Kennedy,” one page, 6.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, February 1, 1960. Letter to Bodley Gallery, a prominent NYC art dealer. In full: "I am writing to ask if you would be good enough to take back the A. Radloff painting of Eve which I bought from you in December. I would be most appreciative if you could refund me what I paid for it—I ask this because my husband does not like it at all—I am sure in the not too distant future I can find something in your gallery which will please us both—You will have a most grateful and indebted customer if you see fit to do this—I hope you will—could you let me know." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Kennedy's own hand. Accompanied by a typescript signed and inscribed by her aunt, "Maude Bouvier Davis, to my friend Dorothy Thorpe, Christmas 1963," containing an address given by her about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
