Front cover of the program for the “First Presentation of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor by the President of the United States,” held at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on October 1, 1978, signed in black ink and felt tip by Neil Armstrong, Alan Shepard, Charles Conrad, John Glenn, Frank Borman, and Betty Grissom. Accompanying the program cover is a TLS from President Jimmy Carter signed “Jimmy,” one page, 6 x 8.5, White House letterhead, October 1, 1978, addressed to Robert Flanagan, in full: “Rosalynn and I appreciated the warm hospitality extended to us at Cape Canaveral today. We enjoyed our visit to the Kennedy Space Center, and are grateful for your efforts to insure its success. Thank you!” Both are mounted and framed to an overall size of 15.75 x 12.75. In overall fine condition. An uncommon and very desirable union of moonwalkers and an American president, whom space historian John Logsdon noted 'was perhaps the least supportive of U.S. human space efforts of any president in the last half-century.'
Originates from the personal collection of longtime NASA employee Robert B. 'Stretch' Flanagan, a Senior Security Specialist who accompanied the Apollo astronauts on their post-flight goodwill world tours. He was nicknamed ‘Stretch’ on account of his 6´6″ height.
