Description

Superior Brady portrait of the Confederate commander

Exquisite 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Robert E. Lee, taken by Mathew Brady in May 1869, prominently signed in ink, "R. E. Lee." Reverse bears Brady's backmark, "M. B. Brady & Co's National Photographic Portrait Gallery, No. 352 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, D.C." In fine condition.

In Roy Meredith's epic study 'The Face of Robert E. Lee,' he described this image as 'Perhaps the most eloquent view of all…never surpassed in simple honesty.' As a signed example of this iconic Lee portrait, taken by the great Civil War photographer Mathew Brady, it is an outstanding and exceedingly desirable piece.
