Notorious criminal (1890-1963) who, while imprisoned, became a self-educated authority on birds and earned the nickname 'The Birdman of Alcatraz.' ALS signed "Bob, Robert Stroud," one page both sides, 8 x 10, March 13, 1954. Letter written from Alcatraz to his sister Mamie, regarding an upcoming book on Stroud's life. In part: "The book is three months overdue now. He assured me last fall it would be done by January…God knows when it will be done. That is what gets my goat…Things not done when they should be done. In '48, I had a good chance to be free when I developed a good plan and he promised to carry it out - then listened to some phonys and made up his mind it would be better to wait for [Thomas] Dewey to be elected. In '51 he missed the boat because he neglected to send a wire when he should…I am sure he is going to miss the boat again." Stroud's full signature appears again in the return address area at top of letter. In fine condition.
