French composer (1842-1912) best known for such operas as 'Manon,' 'Werther,' and 'Thais.' Uncommon 4.5 x 6.5 cabinet photo by Erwin Hanfstaengl of Frankfurt, signed and inscribed in black ink in French, "To Alfredo Edel, invaluable collaborator, his admirer & friend, Massenet, Milan, Paris, 1898." In very good to fine condition, with a light diagonal scratch passing through Massenet's face, and two stray ink lines in the bottom border. Edel was a popular Italian costume designer who worked at the La Scala opera house in Milan.
