Description

A stellar, one-of-a-kind Gone With the Wind presentation script

Remarkable presentation script for Gone With the Wind prepared by producer David O. Selznick circa 1958-1961 and given to Mayor William Hartsfield of Atlanta. Gilt-stamped hardcover, 8.75 x 11.25, 273 pages. Signed and inscribed on a free end page in blue ballpoint, "March 10, 1961, To Mayor William B. Hartsfield, with the affection and gratitude of the 'Gone With the Wind' company, including his admirer—David O. Selznick," "Vivien Leigh," "Butterfly McQueen," and "Olivia de Havilland." Additionally signed by notable people who are part of Gone With the Wind history such as Samuel Tupper (a friend of Mitchell whose review of her novel was the first to be published), humorist Ogden Nash (Selznick was considering him to write the book for the planned GWTW musical), Leroy Anderson (one of America’s premier composers with whom Selznick was discussing the Wind musical), and Eugene and Joseph Mitchell (Margaret Mitchell’s nephews). In fine condition.

In 1939, David O. Selznick had a certain number of the finished Gone With the Wind scripts nicely bound to give as gifts to special recipients after the incredible Atlanta gala premiere extravaganza. He was, in fact, known for doing this after some of his productions. Perhaps in preparation for the twentieth anniversary (1959) of GWTW’s Atlanta premiere, or in preparation for the 1961 gala, special re-premiere in Atlanta, Selznick had a number of script copies made (thought to be fifty) for his company somewhere around 1958-1960. These scripts begin with number 00100 and after many years, ten of these scripts are known to collectors to have reached the market with mixed numbers in the range from 00108 to 00141. The script offered here (#00112) is one of the finest examples of exceptional, one-of-a-kind scripts in the realm of GWTW history.

This superb, 273 page, final shooting script is beautifully bound in chocolate brown pebble leather in deluxe Selznick style. On the front cover is the film's title and “Final Shooting Script” in gilt as well as, “Presented To Hon. William B. Hartsfield, Mayor of Atlanta.” A superlative presentation to commemorate the gala 1961 celebrations and the fact that Hartsfield held a unique and special place in the film’s Atlanta history. Mayor Hartsfield was also Atlanta’s mayor during the historic, world famous 1939 gala premiere.

A truly unique and significant Gone With the Wind piece and the only known GWTW script signed by three of the stars—Leigh, De Havilland and McQueen—in addition to Selznick and others.
