Lardner's outline for "Six Lectures on the Steam-engine as applied to Manufactures, Navigation and Railway transport"

Irish scientific writer (1793-1859) who popularized science and technology, and edited the 133-volume Cabinet Cyclopædia, which covered 'all the usual divisions of knowledge that are not of a technical and professional kind'—namely, arts and manufactures, biography, history, natural history, and natural philosophy. In 1826, he was awarded a gold medal for lectures on the steam engine delivered before the Royal Dublin Society. Handwritten syllabus for a course of lectures by Lardner, eleven pages, 7.25 x 9, signed in the third-person within the heading: "Outline of a course of Six Lectures on the Steam-engine as applied to Manufactures, Navigation and Railway transport, illustrated by working…models and other experimental apparatus. To be delivered to the Members of the Liverpool Mechanics Institution by Dionysius Lardner LL.D., F.R.S. on the evenings of Wednesdays and Saturdays at 8 o'clock precisely commencing on Wednesday 22nd November 1837." The manuscript presents a detailed listing of the topics to be covered in his lectures, ranging from the creation of steam, to the workings of pistons within the engine, to areas that could be serviced by railways and locomotives.
