Prominent American explorer, military officer, and politician (1813-1890) who mapped the Oregon Trail, played a prominent part in conquering California during the Mexican War, and ran in 1856 as the first Republican presidential candidate. ALS signed “J. C. Fremont,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, 1873. Letter to a gentleman, alluding to the Panic of 1873. In part: "I have to thank you for your notes…so far as I can form a judgment from the enquiries I have made it will not be practicable to undertake the coal enterprise for several months to come…You will find that the men who now suffer most are those who have been the most enterprising. On the other hand I think that Mr. Jenks will not be able to sell his coal lands at this time. Any man who may have so large an amount…for investment can place it just now when the returns would be immediate and larger." In fine condition.
