Description

Scarce Voice of America 16″ radio transcription record to be played at 33 1/3 RPM, featuring the important broadcast from Carnegie Hall on December 24, 1949, headlined by Charlie Parker's All-Stars (Charlie Parker, Red Rodney, Al Haig, Tommy Potter, and Roy Haynes), along with the Lennie Tristano Sextet (Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Billy Bauer, Al Shulman, and Jeff Martin). This 16″ transcription (VOA-746/805, J-63/65) has Parker's group doing 'Ornithology,' 'Cheryl,' and 'Koko,' and Tristano's group performing 'You Go to My Head' and 'Sax of a Kind.' In fine condition, with wear to the sleeve.

The Voice of America was established by the US State Department in 1942 as a means for disseminating pro-America ideals through the media abroad. Programs were distributed to overseas affiliates by 16″ transcription, which would require a turntable with extended tonearm clearance to play today. These transcriptions are very scarce, as they were not distributed within the United States.
