Full free frank, measuring 9.75 x 8 unfolded with a center panel of 5 x 3, addressed by Buchanan to "John Reynolds Esquire, Lancaster, Pennsylvania," and franked in the upper right corner, "Free, James Buchanan." Postmarked "Free" at Washington City, December 25, [1836]. In fine condition, with two vertical folds. In 1837, Buchanan nominated Reynolds' son, the future Major General John F. Reynolds, to the Military Academy at West Point; Gen. Reynolds would later be killed in action at Gettysburg. From the collection of Stephen Adamson.
