Description

French composer (1818-1893) best remembered for his composition of 'Ave Maria.' ALS in French in pencil, signed “Ch. Gounod,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5.25, no date. Letter to Madame S. Mousquet, in full (translated): "I am in bed not only with a tenacious attack of the grippe but also as a result of a nervous breakdown, I am not allowed to go out without permission. However, I wish to thank you for your sentiments of gracious affection that inspired your letter and which you gave me the honor to write. As soon as it will be possible for me to get out, I will thank you personally and volubly for it as well as for the admirable bust of the Negress that I would like to keep with your permission. My best remembrances to your illustrious spouse, and for you Madame, my most affectionate respects." In very good to fine condition, with overall creasing. From the collection of Stephen Adamson.
