Description

American writer (1886-1918), best known for the much-anthologized poem Trees; he was killed at the Second Battle of Marne at the age of 31. Signed book: A Wayside Lute by Lizette Woodworth Reese. First edition. Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1909. Hardcover, 5.5 x 7.5, 66 pages. Inscribed on the first free end page in ink to his wife, and signed using his cryptic initials, "Aline Kilmer, V. of P., April the twenty fourth, Nineteen hundred and ten." Autographic condition: very good, with staining and foxing to the signed page. Book condition: G/None, with boards detached and crudely repaired with tape, staining to boards, and foxing to textblock. Accompanied by a handwritten poem signed by Aline Kilmer, entitled "Victory," and a provenance note for the book from their granddaughter, certifying it as being from the library of Joyce and Aline Kilmer.
