Description

"I expect the American Army to stick by me & I shall stick to the American Army"

ALS signed “W. S. Maugham,” one page, 8.5 x 5.5, Parkers Ferry letterhead, December 2, 1943. Letter to Alice B. Phillips, in full: "I was charmed to see your letter. K. P. The whole American army peels potatoes—it doesn't pare them; I expect the American Army to stick by me & I shall stick to the American Army." In very good to fine condition, with a few stains. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope and a letter of provenance from the recipient, who explains that she initially wrote Maugham to complain of his usage of 'peel' and 'pare' in a story he wrote for Collier's.
