Commodore in the United States Navy (1774-1833) best known for his victory over the HMS Java in the War of 1812. ALS signed “Wm. Bainbridge,” one page, 8 x 9.75, April 15, 1829. Written from the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Bainbridge pens a favorable letter of recommendation for H. S. Crabb who "has served in the Navy Yard under my command in the situations of Assistant to the Purser, Clerk to the Naval Instructor, and acting Clerk of the Yard; in all of them he has exhibited integrity, talent and industry to the satisfaction of myself, and those under whom he immediately acted." In very good to fine condition, with a few short edge tears, and paper loss to the corners.
