Swedish-American Army engineer (1803-1889) who designed and built the ironclad warship Monitor for the American Navy. ALS signed “J. Ericsson,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.25, May 28, 1855. In part: "I have your note of Saturday. I was fancied to satisfy Mr. Raymond's wishes and I did so to present an elaborate article on the Steam Ship Ericsson which would have appeared as Mr. R. has been driven by the Scientific American to make a reply. I trust you will do me the justice to admit on reading to day's Times…As the engines themselves you could not prevent anyone from knowing that they are not new steam engines just put in—Purchasers you cannot find here and in Europe, France in particular, the constructor will not hurt your engines. I am patching the model engine with 'violent energy.'" In fine condition, with a few small tape stains to the edge of the second page.
