Named MVP of the 1955 World Series after pitching a Game 7 shutout, Podres was drafted by the US Navy in 1956 and spent the season as a sailor. Discharged in October, he returned to Brooklyn for their final season at Ebbets Field in 1957, leading the league in ERA (2.66) and shutouts (6).
