In Koufax’s second Topps issue, the 20-year-old flamethrowing lefty is shown delivering one of his fearsome pitches, opposite a portrait in his Brooklyn Dodgers cap. Koufax was forced to learn the ropes in the Major Leagues, after signing as a ‘bonus baby’ prevented him from starting out in the minors. Despite his blazing fastball, Koufax struggled with control and he did not emerge as a consistently dominant force on the mound until 1961. He then proceeded to tally six of the greatest seasons of all-time, collecting three Cy Young Awards and an NL MVP in the process. A striking card with clean edges, crisp corners, and excellent registration, this PSA MINT 9 example stands among the most sought-after cards in the 1956 set. Only two have been graded higher by PSA.
