Manuscript DS, signed “George R.,” one page both sides, 9.5 x 14.75, March 23, 1748. Official warrant sent to Thomas Morgan, "Judge Advocate General of Our Forces," authorizing the formation of a military Court Martial to try private Francis Quait, of Lt. General James Oglethorpe’s Regiment of Foot, and private Samuel Casteen, of Lt. General James St. Clair’s Royal Regiment of Foot, for desertion. The document names Colonel Lewis Dejean to serve as President of the Court Martial. Signed nicely in the upper left corner by King George II, and countersigned by John Russell, the 4th Duke of Bedford, (1710-71) who was then Secretary of State for the Southern Department, which encompassed the American Colonies. In very good to fine condition, with splitting to the hinge and folds. Notably, Lt. General James Oglethorpe founded the Colony of Georgia in 1731 and served as its first Governor from 1732-43.
