Description

Beautiful signed first edition of the exquisite 'Arianna a Naxos'

Austrian musician (1732-1809) who takes a place among the first rank of composers in the history of Western music. The sheer magnitude of his gift, along with his seemingly inexhaustible industry, resulted in one of the largest and most significant bodies of work by any single figure. His mastery of two forms, in particular—the string quartet and the symphony—practically defined the Classical style and exerted a potent influence on all composers who followed, most notably Wolfgang Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, both of whom were intimate acquaintances of the older composer. Exceptionally rare signed music score for Haydn's ‘Arianna a Naxos,’ printed in London by John Bland circa June 1791, 14 x 10.25, 18 pages, signed in the lower right of the first page in bold ink, “Haydn.” Bound simply by string without wrappers. In very good to fine condition, with toning and light edge wear.

The publisher, John Bland, was instrumental in bringing Haydn to London and provided his first lodging there in January 1791. 'Arianna' was performed in London in February by the soprano castrato Gasparo Pacchierotti, with Haydn accompanying on the harpsichord. Haydn later regarded the two periods he spent in the British capital (1791-92 and 1794-95) as the happiest of his life.
