Description

Nicklaus as the U.S. Amateur champion

Desirable vintage matte-finish 2.5 x 3.5 portrait of Jack Nicklaus as a 19-year-old undergrad at Ohio State University, signed neatly in blue ballpoint. Typed notation to reverse dates the signature to 1959. In very good to fine condition, with creasing across the bottom. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked October 6, 1959. While attending Ohio State, Nicklaus twice won the U.S. Amateur (1959 and 1961), and he cemented his collegiate legacy with an NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in the year of his graduation. In the 1959 U.S. Amateur, Nicklaus defeated two-time winner and defending champion Charles Coe 1-up in the final 36-hole match when he birdied the 18th hole. Photos signed by Nicklaus from this early period are exceedingly scarce and highly sought after.
