Description

"Lasting peace is our goal in the Middle East, as it is in Southeast Asia and throughout the world"

TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, June 24, 1967. Letter to Ben Oehlert, in part: "I want you to know how deeply I appreciate your warm comment on my foreign policy speech. Lasting peace is our goal in the Middle East, as it is in Southeast Asia and throughout the world, so that men and women everywhere can live full lives without the burdens of fear and frustration. Your support means much to me as we persevere in our purpose." In fine condition, with a few small stains to the left edge.

After graduating from the Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania School of Law, Oehlert (1909-1985) went into private practice and was later hired by the Department of State to work in the Mexican Claims Agency. He spent several years working in top offices for Coca-Cola, W. R. Grace & Co., and the Minute Maid Company before being appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to become Ambassador to Pakistan in 1967, a post he held until his retirement in 1969.
