Actor (1853-1937) best remembered today for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage and in a 1916 silent film. His portrayal of Holmes helped create the modern image of the detective. Scarce 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet portrait of Gillette in a handsome bust-length pose, signed below in bold black ink, "William Gillette, 9 11." Published by Charles L. Ritzmann of New York. In fine condition, with light silvering to darker areas of the image.
