British astronomer (born 1942) who identified the first clear candidate for a black hole, Cygnus X-1, with his colleague Louise Webster. Three items: an ALS, one page, 5.75 x 8.25, written from the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge and addressed to "Faith," in full: "I have been tidying up and found your letter in a pile of papers—I am so sorry that I put it on one side to deal with later and then didn't. I hope this is not too late and suits your purpose"; and a pair of ballpoint sketches on white 11 x 8.5 sheets, which respectively depict "Black Hole binary star system SS433 with opposing relativistic jets" and "Black Hole binary star system Cygnus X-1," both signed in the lower right corner by Murdin. In overall fine condition.
