Description

Highly appealing group lot of five FDCs with cachets honoring the centennial of baseball, each postmarked at Cooperstown on June 12, 1939, each individually signed in ballpoint or fountain pen by a Hall of Fame baseball player: “J. Franklin Baker, Trappe, Md.,” “Rogers Hornsby,” “Charles A. Kind Nichols,” “Mel Ott,” and “Tris Speaker.” Each cover also bears a three-cent postage stamp honoring baseball's 100th anniversary, which was issued in conjunction with the dedication and opening of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. In overall fine condition. Each cover is individually encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder and accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.

Tris Speaker was elected to the Hall as a member of its second class in 1937, and was honored at the first induction ceremonies in 1939. Kid Nichols became the youngest pitcher to join the 300 Win Club and was elected to the Hall of Fame by way of the Veteran's Committee in 1949. Legendary National League hitter and two-time Triple Crown winner Rogers Hornsby was elected to the Hall in 1942. Remembered as the home run king of the deadball era, Frank Baker was elected as a Hall of Famer in 1955. Famed for his high leg kick and extreme left-handed power, Mel Ott became the first National Leaguer to surpass 500 home runs and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1951.
