Description

Renowned American artist (1889-1975) whose distinctive 'regionalist' style made him one of the most influential figures in American art during the 1930s and 1940s. ALS signed “Thomas H. Benton,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, June 6, 1970. Letter to "Messrs Cooney and Baker," in part:"I have no more information about Willard Wright's part in the Forum Exhibition than is contained in my book 'An American in Art' (Kansas University Press). Willard was almost solely responsible for the organization of the exhibition inducing other members (patrons) to serve by lending their names. I'll be glad to talk with you anyhow on June 11th or 12th." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Benton's hand. A noted art critic, Wright organized the pioneering 'Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters' in 1916, which brought the works of sixteen American Modernists—including Benton—to the public's attention.
