English Particular Baptist preacher and author (1834-1892) known for his powerful sermons as the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel; he helped popularize the phrase 'What would Jesus do?' ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, no date. A letter to his "Brother," in part: "Your letter rc'd have been promptly answered but I have been from home every day last week & now I can only say—I shall be at home from 9 to 10 on Sat next but beside that hour I shall not be at home & to be seen during this week. If my brethren are seeking to get me to preach I can spare the journey by saying that I can make no new engagements for a year to come & that if I were at perfect leisure I would not at present visit Lancashire." In very good to fine condition, with some toning and staining, and a small tear to the last page.
