English physician, teacher, and feminist (1840-1912) remembered as the first practicing female doctor in Scotland. ALS signed “S. Jex-Blake,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Bruntsfield Lodge letterhead, January 25. Letter requesting information on a potential employee, in part: "I should be greatly obliged if you would inform me whether Margaret Stewart was, as she says, in your service for 2 1/2 years, & left for no fault; & whether you can recommend her as thoroughly steady, sober, honest, & truthful; & also a good laundry maid, & able to help in housework. Please say what wages she had with you, & whether you found her obliging & civil, & clean in her work & person." In very good to fine condition, with creasing, edge tears, and some areas of edge paper loss.
