TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9.25, White House letterhead, September 28, 1923. Letter to John Hays Hammond of the United States Coal Commission, in full: "Although your Commission was before me, and I had the opportunity of saying a word of thanks for your services, I wish, nevertheless, to take opportunity to put the expression of my sentiments into more permanent form. I am sure that you will look back with satisfaction upon the character of the service you have rendered, and feel that you have been of real benefit to a great portion of your fellow citizens. I trust that you will be able to follow up your suggestions with the Congress, when it comes into session." In fine condition. A friend of Presidents Grant, Hayes, Roosevelt, and Coolidge, Hammond was a mining engineer, diplomat, and philanthropist, who served as chairman of the US Coal Commission in 1922-1923.
