TLS signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, February 20, 1889. Two weeks before taking office as president, a letter to Senator John Percival Jones, commenting on Nevada legislation, cabinet recommendations, and the political climate in California. In part: "I have your letter of Feb. 18th, with the engrossed copy of the resolutions adopted by the Legislature of Nevada, Jan. 10th, 1889. Your expressions are very kind, thoughtful and considerate; and it is a pleasure to know that there are some who approach the Cabinet question in that way. I do not know what I can do now for the Pacific Coast, if anything. Had I received a month ago the assurance that any selection I made there would be agreeable and helpful to the party, it would have been a very valuable contribution to my consideration of the question. I had gathered the impression that in California there was not a unanimity of sentiment and that possibly, if I followed my own choice, I might impair rather than improve the political situation there." In fine condition, with light show-through from a notation on the reverse.
