Description

Contract, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 11, September 2, 1940. Semi-Professional Baseball League of Puerto Rico contract in which "Roy Campanella, of the United States," agrees to "play baseball during the season of 1940-1941" for the Caguas Base-Ball Club, for the weekly salary of $40. Boldly signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Roy Campanella, and countersigned by the president of the Caguas club and two witnesses. In fine condition, with light scattered creases and staining. Campanella began his career in the Negro Leagues with the Washington Elite Giants in 1937 after dropping out of school on his sixteenth birthday; the team moved to Baltimore in the following year, and he became one of their star players. He often played in Puerto Rico and Cuba during the winter seasons, and in 1940-1941, with Caguas, Puerto Rico, he hit .263 with 8 home runs in only 171 at bats. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
