Description

Group of four items associated with inventor Hiram Maxim (1840-1916), best known for inventing the first portable fully automatic machine gun, but who also experimented with powered flight. Includes: an ink signature, "Hiram S. Maxim," on an off-white sheet with an inscription in another hand, dated at London, September 1915; an original vintage 7 x 4.75 ink and gouache drawing of Maxim's 1894 flying machine executed in an unknown hand; a booklet entitled "Flight and Flying Machines: Illustrated with Numerous Lantern Slides including many lent by Hiram S. Maxim" by Dr. G. H. Bryan, published in Woolwich in 1896, 20 pages, 6 x 9.5, containing the text of a lecture delivered at the Royal Artillery Institution; and a glossy 3.5 x 5.5 photograph of Maxim in his airplane, printed later. In overall very good to fine condition, with spotty irregular toning to the Maxim signature.
